Understanding Your Saju Chart (Korean Four Pillars)
If you've just generated your Saju chart using the calculator above, you might be wondering what all those symbols and elements mean. Saju (사주), which literally translates to "Four Pillars," is an ancient East Asian system of destiny analysis. By mapping out the cosmic energies present at the exact time of your birth, Saju creates a unique blueprint of your potential, personality, and life path.
The Structure of the Four Pillars
Your chart is divided into four distinct pillars, each representing a different aspect of your life and a different stage of your development:
- The Year Pillar (Ancestor/Early Life): This represents your roots, ancestors, and early childhood (roughly ages 0-19). It indicates the broad environment you were born into and your relationship with society at large.
- The Month Pillar (Parents/Youth): Representing your youth and early adulthood (ages 20-39), this pillar governs your relationships with parents, siblings, and your early career environment. It is considered one of the most powerful pillars for determining your innate talents.
- The Day Pillar (Self/Spouse): This is the core of your chart (ages 40-59). The top half (Heavenly Stem) represents you (the Day Master), while the bottom half (Earthly Branch) represents your spouse or your domestic life.
- The Hour Pillar (Children/Late Life): Representing your later years (age 60+), this pillar gives insights into your relationship with your children, your legacy, and your inner, private thoughts. (Note: If you didn't enter a birth time, this pillar cannot be calculated).
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches
Each of the four pillars consists of two characters, making eight characters in total (hence the Chinese name Bazi, or "Eight Characters"). The top character is the Heavenly Stem (천간), representing the pure, visible energy of heaven. The bottom character is the Earthly Branch (지지), representing the grounded, complex energy of earth.
There are 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches (the famous 12 Zodiac Animals). When combined, they create a 60-year cycle known as the Sexagenary cycle. The interplay between your Stems and Branches—whether they support each other, clash, or combine—forms the basis of Saju interpretation.
What is the "Day Master"?
The most important single element in your chart is your Day Master (일간). This is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents your core identity, your ego, and your fundamental nature. All other elements in your chart are analyzed based on their relationship to your Day Master. For example, if your Day Master is "Yang Wood," you might be described as a sturdy, growing tree that provides shelter to others.
The Five Elements (오행 - Ohaeng)
Saju is deeply rooted in the theory of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Unlike Western astrology, which focuses primarily on constellations, Saju focuses on the flow and balance of these elemental energies.
A "perfect" chart doesn't exist. Most people have an imbalance—perhaps too much Fire and no Water, or an abundance of Earth. The goal of Saju isn't to judge a chart as "good" or "bad," but to understand your unique elemental makeup. If you know you lack Water (which represents wisdom and flexibility), you can consciously work to cultivate those traits in your life.
A Tool for Self-Reflection, Not Prediction
It is crucial to approach Saju as a tool for self-understanding rather than a deterministic fortune-telling device. Your chart reveals your psychological tendencies and the "weather" of your life's seasons, but your free will and daily choices ultimate determine your destiny.
Use the insights gained from your Saju reading to play to your strengths, be mindful of your blind spots, and navigate your relationships with greater empathy.
